Summer is so very close. School years are winding down. Graduations occur every day. Proms are over. Weddings are increasing. Outdoor events are everywhere: music festivals, picnics, barbecues, wedding showers, parties, pool get-togethers, class trips. With the summer’s arrival come heat, humidity, swimming, sand and salt. These can make life hard for the curly haired set. But we’ve got you covered. Here is some serious advice on taking care of your hair during the summer, so your curly hair can have the hottest styles!
Summer Hairstyle #1: Beachy Waves
If you have looser curls or waves, instead of trying to tame or straighten your hair, just go with it. Use a curling or straightening iron, and curl your hair outwards in loose curls. Pull on the end of he hair to straighten the very end. Beachy curls are an imperfect, informal style, so don’t worry about perfection…it’s so overrated!
Summer Hairstyle #2: Updos
From topknots to messy buns to braids, getting that hot, thick hair off your neck and up high accomplishes two things. First, it actually keeps your hair in a nice style. Second, a cool updo looks great but also protects your curls from the humidity and even the water if you’re not immersing your whole head.
Surf, Sun and Sand: How to Prepare for Swimming
When the temperature climbs, the best way to cool down and enjoy yourself is swimming. We don’t want any more curly girls staying out of the pool or the ocean or lake. The water feels awesome and that’s where the party is. With just a few steps, you can protect your hair and make your life a little easier. First of all, that updo is great for your hair. Hats, wraps and caps are also great. Before you get into the water, condition the heck out of it, creating a barrier between your hair and the chlorinated or salty water that it’s going to encounter. Also, just before you get into the water, get some tap water on your head: another barrier!
When you’re leaving the pool, re-rinse your hair with tap water. You can apply some leave-in conditioner if you’re not too sweaty or use only regular conditioner if you’ve removed most of the dirty, sweat, chlorine and sand.
Your pool bag should include your towel, your products and a spray bottle of fresh water.
Double Duty Conditioning:
You know those conditioners that are activated by heat? You can put them in before heading out in the elements and then you’ll be conditioning your hair while you’re outside. Winner!
Sweat serves an important function: it cools your body off naturally. But sweat can cause some damage to the edges of your hair, so you want to protect the parts of your head where sweat most naturally occurs. Keeping hair off the back of the neck is the easiest move and protecting your scalp with product or wraps will help do the trick. If your hair gets sweaty, rinse it or shampoo it if necessary. If it’s a light sheen of sweat or minimal, you might be able to get away with conditioner washing.
Summer Hairstyle #3: The Summer Cut
You might want to think about which cuts allow you to showcase your awesome curls. The layered bob (see Tracee Ellis Ross) is a great hairstyle that allows for a nice full silhouette.
Summer Hairstyle #4: Hot Accessories
If you’re keeping your hair up or down, summer is a great time to add a little pop or bling, like flowers (fake or real), cool barrettes, clips or even the glittery partings to decorate your part. Headbands, scrunchies, wraps can help you keep the hair protected from the environments, keep you from sweating and can protect your hair. Air Dry if Possible
If your hair isn’t ultra-thick, you might be able to let your hair air dry after you wash it in the summer. This is so good for your hair. But if your hair remains wet and never really air dries, bag this plan and you’ll still have to blow dry.
Enjoy the weekend, show off your curls and be a part of the crowd. Don’t let the extra maintenance of curly hair keep you from enjoying the sun and the swimming!
